The Social Action Committee recently announced the soft launch of Deltas in the District, a new civic engagement initiative established to mobilize Washington DC Alumnae Chapter members and their neighbors to regularly attend and participate in Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) meetings and other local civic gatherings across all eight wards of the District.
Created in response to the National Social Action Commission’s call for chapters to prioritize local meeting attendance and engagement, the initiative is designed to strengthen civic participation at the neighborhood level. A dedicated task force was established under the Social Action Committee, with Soror Patrice Clement serving as task force chair. Ward captains were appointed across all eight wards to serve as chapter liaisons, and the task force has been meeting monthly to coordinate efforts and advance the initiative’s goals.
A Mission Rooted in Action
The initiative is guided by a clear mission: to cultivate informed, engaged, and empowered WDCAC leaders who champion equity and justice through active participation in local governance, amplifying community voices and advancing policy priorities aligned with Grand Chapter and the Eastern Region.
Building the Foundation
To prepare members for meaningful participation, the task force developed the Deltas in the District Momentum Guide—a practical resource covering everything from locating ANC meetings to tracking participation, gathering community insights, and transforming local engagement into informed advocacy.
The soft launch introduced the initiative to the chapter and began building its leadership structure by recruiting ward captains and inviting members to join their respective wards. Members were also encouraged to identify their ANC commissioners and Single Member District representatives, strengthening the chapter’s connection to the local governance structures that shape their neighborhoods. Chapter email and weekly communications will continue to serve as the primary channels for updates and engagement opportunities.
As Deltas in the District continues to grow, it reflects the Sorority’s enduring commitment to public service and civic engagement. More than a chapter initiative, this work represents what it looks like when an organization meets its community exactly where it is—at the local level, in neighborhood meeting rooms, and at the tables where decisions are made.
The initiative will serve as a foundation for member training, civic engagement opportunities, and stronger relationships with local leaders while expanding WDCAC’s visibility and impact across the District. The task force looks forward to strengthening the chapter’s presence and engagement across all eight wards.
