After the successful location of the burial site of Mary Edna Brown Coleman, one of the 22 Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Washington DC Alumnae Chapter has partnered with several local Delta chapters and Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc (@akaxiomega) to help restore Woodlawn Cemetery and the rich history that rests there.

“Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” – Fannie Lou Hamer

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. He informed the enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. The name is a play on the date of June and nineteen. June 19th freed enslaved people in the rebelling states. It did not free enslaved people throughout the nation.
It took the creation of the Emancipation Proclamation, the end of the Civil War, and the passage of the 13th Amendment to finally end slavery throughout the nation. The Reconstruction Amendments are significant as they came into being after the end of the Civil War. They include the 13th Amendment that ended slavery; the 14th Amendment provided citizenship, due process and equal protection; and the 15th Amendment provided the opportunity to vote and hold office.
At its very core, Juneteenth is this affirmation that we are here, and we will continue to be here. (credit: @nmaahc)

From being our protectors during our most tender years to our biggest supporters, fathers positively shape the lives of their families and communities. Fathers have always provided a soft place to land throughout our most difficult times and today we celebrate them!

To those remembering a father on this holiday, we pray prayers of security and solace on today and the days to come.

Happy Father's Day to the fathers and friends of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated!

Despite being 100 miles apart, members and friends gathered on June 4 for our Red SHOE Walk.
Members at our chapter self-care retreat took in the sights during their walk in Berkeley Springs, WV. Back at home in DC, participants walked a route starting at Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. National Headquarters.
