  • Join @WDCAC World Drowning Prevention Day community workshop to learn CPR and water skills training to help save lives. Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide. The CDC reports that Almost 40 million adults (15.4%) in the United States do not know how to swim and over half (54.7%) have never taken a swimming lesson. However, with our loved ones in the water during the summer, it is vital to have the skills needed to save our lives and the lives of loved ones, by learning the skills to prevent water tragedies.

On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass stood before an abolitionist group and gave one of his most famous speeches: “What To The Slave Is The Fourth of July?” That speech confronted the glaring hypocrisy of a day celebrating freedom in a country that still endorsed the bondage and forced labor of more than 1 in 8 of its residents. And while the institution of slavery has been abolished, its consequences have endured through the generations.

In July 2020, we asked five young Douglass descendants to read and respond to excerpts of that speech. They reflected on America’s ongoing pursuit of liberty and justice for all.

This project was inspired by the documentary project @we.are.whitmanalabama.
