Woodlawn Cemetery is an historic cemetery in the Benning Ridge neighborhood of Washington, DC. The 22.5 acre cemetery contains approximately 36,000 burials, nearly all of them African American. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 1966.
The Woodlawn Collaborative Project involves local chapters from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated working together to make a difference in this sacred burial space of our ancestors. The Woodlawn Collaborative Project aspires to have Woodlawn Cemetery burial grounds regarded as a place where our FOUNDER/ancestors could be appropriately honored and provided with dignity, care, and respect in death. These places matter and merit our consideration and protection because they represent our collective history. Telling their stories through preserving their final resting place is vital to accurately portraying African American history in D.C. The Woodlawn Collaborative Project will continue until 2026, or until the activities have been completed.
