WELLNESS

A Holistic Approach to Wellness

The Washington DC Alumnae Chapter (WDCAC) is deeply committed to advancing the Physical & Mental Health priorities established by Grand Chapter. As an organization composed predominantly of African American women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is uniquely positioned to impact not only the health and well-being of its members, but also the families and communities we serve. Our mission extends beyond sisterhood—we strive to create lasting change through comprehensive health initiatives that support both physical and mental wellness, particularly in communities disproportionately affected by health disparities.

Journey to Wellness Agenda: Committing to Our Physical and Mental Health

Our Journey to Wellness initiative calls on members and the broader community to embrace healthier living through consistent, intentional action. As a comprehensive health initiative, it represents an ongoing commitment to improving physical, emotional, and mental well-being—especially in communities that face disproportionate health challenges.

WDCAC’s wellness agenda focuses on three key areas:

  • Physical Activity & Preventive Health – Encouraging active lifestyles and increasing access to health screenings and education to promote early detection and disease prevention.
  • Mental Health & Emotional Resilience – Supporting emotional well-being through open dialogue, stress management strategies, and destigmatizing mental health care.
  • Community Access & Advocacy – Expanding access to health resources and advocating for equitable care across Washington, DC through outreach, partnerships, and culturally relevant programming.

Through these focus areas, WDCAC empowers individuals and families to take control of their health journeys—with tools, support, and resources that make long-term wellness achievable.

Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health

Mental health is a vital component of overall wellness. WDCAC’s Journey to Wellness initiative shines a spotlight on the mental health challenges that disproportionately affect African American families, including anxiety, depression, domestic violence, anger management, stress, and substance abuse. The program educates both youth and adults about the racial disparities in accessing mental health care, while actively working to break the stigma that too often surrounds mental health treatment. Our goal is to provide tools and resources that empower individuals and families to seek the support they need —reducing the barriers to mental health care and fostering healthier, stronger communities.

Shaping a Healthier Future for Our Members and Community

At the core of WDCAC’s Journey to Wellness is a commitment to building healthier communities. By addressing both the physical and mental health needs of our members and the broader Washington, DC community, we strive to foster a lasting culture of health and wellness. Through education, strategic collaborations with community partners, and direct outreach, WDCAC remains dedicated to empowering African American families to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

We collaborate with community organizations to offer accessible wellness strategies focused on improving nutrition, increasing physical activity, and promoting sustainable weight management. These efforts contribute to better health outcomes for African American families and ensure individuals are connected to the appropriate resources when additional support is needed.
